ALVARENGA MARQUES (Al.Ma.) - is a Portuguese artist who was born in Mozambique (Pemba), where she spent her childhood.
Actually she lives and works at Porto, in the north of Portugal, divided between teaching and plastic creation, she has been preferentially exploring the potentials allowed in painting, but is also dedicated to photography and digital art.
AlMa took her Licentiate Degree in Painting in 1992 at FBAUP (University of Fine Arts of Porto). She has participated in several group exhibitions and events since 1988, Portugal, Germany, Brazil, France, Spain, Canada, etc. She held several solo exhibitions in Portugal and received awards and distinctions both in Portugal and abroad. Always fascinated by figuration, it was through experimentation that she came across a way of representing in which the recycling of images was gaining strength. Quotes, transcriptions and doodles became part of the visual language that she adopted in a globalizing context in which the perception of the work can be seen as a moment of an intrinsic imaginary history that seeks to be reconstructed. The appropriation strategy enabled her to compose diverse approaches, establishing parameters of identification recognizable by the viewer in a game of multicultural and multiracial relations where strangeness and perplexity are installed through unexpected and sometimes unusual environments. She often uses media figures such as Pop stars or objects that are quite identifiable in confrontation with typical, regional or tribal images.
