Portrait of an apple tree

Kristine Kutepova / Portrait of an apple tree

Acrylic on canvas.

The series "The Spirit of the River" developed when the artist Kristine Kutepova moved to live outside the city. The nature that was all around gave energy, the nearby flowing river captivated, but the strongest impulse to paint the nature was when she met a fairy-tale teller, living in the neighborhood. Thus, in the series "The Spirit of the River" the realistic has merged with the fantasy. Each painting is a realistic portrait of nature. But by changing the color, the artist raises the everyday and self-evident fragment of matter to the level of infinity. There is nothing insignificant in nature, everything is special and everything has a place in the eternal course of the world.

Looking at the portrait of a flowering appletree, the works of two artists come to mind. The first is Sandro Botticelli (1483 - 1485) "The birth of Venus" and Hora of springtime, who waits to greet Venus ashore with a cloak covered in pink flowers. According to the interpretation by Ernst Gombrich, the work depicts the symbolic fusion of Spirit and Matter, the harmonious interaction of Idea and Nature.

Damien Hirst's works with flowering trees come to mind as the second. Just unlike Hirst's prints, this is an original painting.

Bio

The emerging artist Kristīne Kutepova (1982) has found her way into the world of painting through somewhat different paths. In 2011 she graduated from Riga Technical University, Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management with BA in Real Estate and Property Management. In 2013 she started studies at the Art Academy of Latvia, Department of Textile Art. Two years later she applied for the Department of Painting, and in 2019 she graduated with a Master's degree.

“I am happy to have found my path and core of my essence, I feel confident about my pursuit. Through art I can think, feel and perceive differently, observe the world from a different angle. I tend to get engulfed in my work, losing awareness of the surrounding world. I see it as a full-hearted meditation turning me into a paintbrush in the hands of somebody else.”

The artist has already caught the attention of collectors, received the “SEB Scholarship in Painting 2017” and Ināra Tetereva Art Scholarship in 2015. Since 2014 she has participated in group exhibitions, including international projects in Italy and Germany, as well as multiple solo exhibitions.
