The Mart Museum of modern and contemporary art of Trento and Rovereto is one of the most important European museums. Born in 1987 as a functional body of the Autonomous Province of Trento, the Mart today operates in three distinct places: in Rovereto the main headquarters of the Museum (a large architectural complex inaugurated in 2002 by Mario Botta and Giulio Andreolli), at the Casa d' Arte Futurista Depero and, in Trento, at the Galleria Civica.
The latter became part of the Mart, with its inauguration in the historic center of Trento, in October 2013. The Board of Directors of the Mart, nominated by the Provincial Government, is currently chaired by Ilaria Vescovi.
The Councilors are: Matteo Lunelli (Vice President), Stefano Andreis and Maria Concetta Mattei. Since its foundation date to December 2011, the Mart Museum has been directed by Gabriella Belli. Since February 2012 and for the following three years, the management has been entrusted to Cristiana Collu.
Starting from June 2015, the Mart Museum is managed by Gianfranco Maraniello, nominated by the Board of Directors with a five-year term. Conceived with the idea of "cultural pole" rather than traditional museum, the Mart interacts with the Civic Library, the Provincial Auditorium, the Municipal Theater and the public park.
Besides offering exhibitions, events and workshops, it hosts artists, curators, companies, international and local events, proposing itself as a welcoming and accessible location.
The Mart is now an important European exhibition center, a point of reference for major international museums, a point of listening and dialogue for the surrounding area and a complex machine that constantly stimulates the public, artists, collectors, businesses and also local communities.
