Theo Mackaay

Theo Mackaay

Theo Mackaay was born on November 19, 1950 in Utrecht. His love for sculpting led Theo Mackaay to train as a stonemason in 1970. With this foundation, he studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy from 1972 to 1976, after which he attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam until 1979. Theo Mackaay is a versatile artist. He makes sculptures (including the Golden Calf) and paintings. He is also a musician and in the 1970s he played with Lenny Kuhr and in the band Braak.

Theo Mackaay sculptures have their own signature, in keeping with the art movement of deformed figurism, in which the elongated, flowing and sometimes strange organic shapes clearly show what you are looking at. That makes a Theo Mackaay statue an elegant work of art to look at. The striking shapes and glossy versions of the Theo Mackaay statues make them eye-catchers in any interior. Incidentally, you can also come across a Theo Mackaay statue in public space.

The deformed figurism is also reflected in the Theo Mackaay paintings. The colorful figures in a Theo Mackaay painting are always entangled in a wave of colour, each other or with horses. The horse is a theme that comes back a lot in Theo Mackaay paintings. A Theo Mackaay painting sucks the viewer in and keeps you hooked through the special spectacle full of details, vibrant colors and organic shapes.
